One thing that surprised me when I started this blog was that you, members of the public, have ideas about how to help solve the oil spill disaster and BP doesn’t want to hear about them. We’ve now gotten five unsolicited contact forms containing suggestions for stopping or preventing damage from the spill, and one person making the suggestion appears to have a good idea but says BP won’t talk with him. I’m a lawyer, not an engineer, so it may be that none of the ideas have merit, but I’m going to post the suggestions here and send links to some people who are involved in the cleanup effort. If you have an idea you think is worth considering, use our Contact Form and send it along. Social media is already helping pinpoint the damage and provide contact information for people who see injured birds and other things that need reporting. It would be nice if social media could give one member of the public a way to contribute one brilliant idea. I’m calling it “Crowdsourcing the Oil Spill.”
Here, contact information with those who have given permission, are your suggestions. If any agency or company working to stop the gusher or cleanup the oil wants to contact any of these people, I will be happy to provide their contact information.
1. Mark Badger writes: “We have a way to contain the oil coming up from the seabed and we manufacture a boom system that far, far exceeds anything you have ever seen. 600 miles of it can be produced and deployed in under 30 days with current available materials.
Our boom sits a full three feet at water level and extends 8 feet under water and can be used as a containment system for animals as well in shallow waters like the Florida Keys. What are you going to do when dead manatees start washing up?
Our containment system for the well can be manufactured and deployed for complete containment in about 21 days. It is very simple to build, it will work in heavy seas, very simple to deploy and maintain. This system would allow the capture of ALL of the oil coming out of the well. It will even work in 50 foot seas and will withstand a hurricane.
We have tried to move our ideas forward to BP but we get no return calls or contact.

2. Ed M. writes: “Why not run tubing string inside recovery casing and inject steam. Haven’t done math but should be able to get effect of line heater.”

1. Raise the dome.
2. Place a puncturable membrane on the bottom. (8 mil Visqueen)
3. Lower the dome 90 percent in the water.
4. Fill with automotive antifreeze.
5. Lower the dome back into position.
Hopefully, the majority of the antifreeze would remain in the dome during the descent.”

Clive W. writes: “Isn’t it possible to use tankers equipped with oil /water separators to literally vacuum up oil on the surface of the water, extract the oil and pump filtered water back into the ocean ? The oil would then be stored in the hold and taken back to storage containers on land. The technology to do this already exists it’s just a matter of putting it all together.
It just might work as a temporary solution.

5. David C. writes: “Directors at British Petroleum , Honorable,Prudent,Beloved,Faithful. I have been a metal worker for many years. I have an idea to stop the oil but if you use it the idea you pay for my dentist bill 100% what ever I need. So my idea is to drill small holes, horizontal holes, in the existing well head pipe say, 1/4″ or3/8″. Then push steel rods into the holes like fingers. Keep on inserting the rods until you create a grid. Maybe you will have to go up and down the pipe with a series of rods. Then go about six feet down from the grid drill another hole big enough to inject golf balls. After that is done drill a hole in the middle of this mess of semi-jammed golf balls and inject a plastic epoxy into the middle under high pressure then the pipe would jam. Like some one in England once said, “jam yesterday, jam tomorrow but never jam today”. Good luck God be with you. Your friend David C….”

If the wildlife ..such as birds …are drenched in oil ..their feathers must absorb it very quickly. Why can’t you ask the poultry plants for feathers to distribute on the surface to absorb the oil . Then net the feathers and dispose of them .

Engineer a flange attached to a cut-off valve that can be positioned into place.
Remove the top flange in currently in place, attached to cut pipe
Position new flange and hold while firmly anchored to BOP while the new flange/cut off valve is installed. Leave valve open to relieve pressure during install. Also, use a beveled/gasketed flange to relieve pressure during the install.
Once the flange is in place, where NO oil leaks at the flange connection, then shut off the flow
I was a machinest for years. my idea is to insert a rubber plug in it like a boat plug were you can seal it. i have more details if interested contact me .
Why can’t a small explosive be set off in the 3 miles of pipe between the surface and the oil to collapse the pipe in on itself? I’m sure the mining community and/or the military would have the technology to detonate a controlled explosion. Or would BP loss to much money in the small amount of oil that they are able to capture while destroying the Gulf of Mexico with what they can’t capture? Once the oil is STOPPED, we would then have a chance to get it cleaned up, probably without BPs help.

The following suggestion was submitted on an Alternative Technology Response Form two weeks ago.
As every schoolboy knows, if you have liquid gushing out of a hose or pipe you can increase the opening two-fold and reduce the pressure by half. A simple solution, therefore, to a very complex problem.
Step 1:
Build a container, maybe the one you already have will do, and remove the base of it entirely. Cut 4 holes in the top, each one being 1/2 the diameter of the pipe in the ground. Provide covers for each hole, similar to hatch covers in submarines, and attach shut-off valves to each cover. Repeat process by cutting 2 additional holes on side of container complete with covers and shut-off valves. Leave all holes open and lower container over pipe in ground. Seal base of container in seabed. A mixture of oil and sea water will gush out of all 6 holes at 1/3 the pressure of the oil coming out of the pipe in the ground. The ongoing problem with pressure has now been mitigated.
Step 2:
Close hatch cover and shut-off valve on 1 hole in the top of the container. Attach hose to cover and connect it to a much larger larger hose or pipe leading to oil tanker above. Open shut-off valve and allow oil/sea water to drain into hose. Repeat process with other 3 holes in top of container one at a time so as not to disturb pressure inside container. By the time all 4 holes are sealed and draining properly, most, if not all, of the sea water will have been forced out and the container will be filled with oil. The pressure inside container will remain at approximately 1/3 the pressure of the oil coming out of pipe in the ground.
Step 3:
Close hatch covers and shut-off valves on the 2 holes on the side of container. Pressure inside container will increase to 1/2 pressure of the oil coming out of pipe in the ground. Shut-off valves can be opened or closed to adjust pressure inside of container, if required. Attach hoses to covers that can be used for pumping in chemicals to prevent the formation of ice crystals or, better still, pumping in concrete that will surround the pipe in the seabed and stop the flow of oil completely. With a little luck, you should be able to remove the container after the cement has hardened and use it again if ever, Heaven forbid, the situation repeats itself elsewhere.

I would suggest that the big ships dredgers(those ships you see on Discovery Channel that are used to suck sand an rocks from the ocean floor and pump it out onto land) be used to suck up the oil that is at the shores for starters and put them in the same tankers that would transport the oil and then treat it chemically to remove the oil again. Also use the dredgers along with an extended pipeline and repeat the process above to suck at the rupture under sea.
Why can’t they just fit a smaller pipe in the hole, and either inflate rings (with either seawater or other substance)to fill the gap between the old and new pipe, and send it straight up to a tanker or platform? or have rings like a piston, compress, slide into hole, and done? If the pressure is too great, increase the diameter of the portion of the pipe as it rises.

Alot of these ideas are great, but at a depth of 5000 ft or so makes it difficult.
My idea is because the oil flow forces upwards at great pressure, how about a series of giant intertwined nets added one by one (whatever material that is strong enough to withstand the pressure wire mesh etc.) but the net has to have holes that it doesn’t interrupt the oil flow. At the corners of this net, (could be shaped circular or square) are giant anchors that carry it down to the depths below and wrap around the pipe from the weight of the anchors.
The upward flowing oil won’t interrupt it’s descent down because the holes in the net allow the oil to pass through. Once you get the first net to cover the hole, then drop another one, then another and another until it is manageable enough to cap with cement or whatever idea which can be used. Basically a filter that slows it down enough to make the finally capping or other idea of sealing it off feasible.
This old Texan,just might have an idea to stem the flow long enough for you to get a hand on this epic dissater.I call it (thread the neadle) it goes something lie this.1 clear your debrie area, cut your pipe below the ocean floor,Id say about 4 feet down.This will cause a divit mound around the drill pipe so that your submersibles can see a bit better. Make sure to cut below the rupture,this is imperitive so you can see what your doing with your submersibles.Once your visual has been made,place a guide net(one similar to the refuleing systems on our aircraft) over the top of the pipe. After you get the coupling device locked on the pipe,your now ready to (Thread the neadle) Now the interesting work begins.Develop a high pressure rubber bladder thats colapsable enough to fit down the pipe,using a led ball to help with your ROVs to guide your bladder at least one half mile down the run away pipeline,this will also give you enough pipe to start your plug,be it cement or what ever your engineers decide will best do the job as far as killing off the well.We have this technology in place.We just have to put the right people in the right places to make it happen.Im sure with your extroidinary plethera of conections,you can land a man on the moon.I hope this seems like a viable solution.The best of luck on whatever your actions.Though I pray it happens soon.
An attention grabber that appears at many strip malls, car lots, etc. may be useful in devising a solution to this oil spill. I’m speaking of the red or blue plastic tube men who “dance”, arms waving, atop of stream of air pumped into their base. The “tube man” would, of course, need to be made of different material, and with different dimensions, but the waving motion might be enough to prevent the problem with ice crystals forming and the “head” and “arms” could be extended and, near the surface, become hoses that feed into the collection tankers. Hope this idea is worth considering.
Can they seal the leaking pipeline (if its made of metal) by capping it with a huge magnetic lid that would attach to 2 pieces of big magnetic collars attached to the “neck” of th e leaking pipeline, on each side to make a circular collar. I thought magnetic so it will not necessitate a lot of labor attaching the pieces to each other. The 2 piece collar in place will fit snuggly with the big magnetic cap that will be attached to the collar after the collar is in place, that will seal the leaking pipeline.
Just want to add that of course the big magnetic cap and its secured collar attachment have to weigh more than the pressure/weight exerted by the oil leak to keep it from being forced away.
why couldn’t you attach a long arm to a robotic sub, with an automotive air bag at the end. pilot it into the hole in the pipe, and detonate it. seems it could stop the flow long enough to figure something more permanant.
All around the world in strategic locations ships are sunk to create
artificial reefs. At the leaking well-head a derelict ship, with its deck
and superstructure removed, needs to be sunk and placed upside-
down over the well-head. The weight of the ship will hold it in place.
As oil is lighter than water and rises, the oil will rise up into the hull of
the ship where a tap can be inserted through the hull to harvest the
leaking oil. The tap can be machined into the hull before it is sunk and
the appropriate fittings pre-installed. This is a fast and relatively
inexpensive fix and should be implemented without delay. This fix
will allow oil to continue to be brought up to the surface and processed.
Use Costner’s machines. But BP would need to raise a giant (rubber?) almost buoyant funnel/hose – about 50 feets in diameter from leak to the surface to make them work – otherwise the oil will disperse all over the place (sea) and these machines won’t have chance to capture almost any of it. Lets say a square yard of funnel material costs 5 bucks – then the funnel would cost about half million bucks – not bad compared to billion they already spent. The machines would suck about 200 thousand barrels of oil/water mixture per day from top and clean it. The biggest engineering problem would be to anchor the funnel – otherwise the current will take it away. Anchoring costs will be probably higher than the cost of the funnel.
Construct a MASS(object large and heavy enough to sit on hole)
How massive? 100 ton/ or 100.000 ton. more? a billion ton?You get the idea. keep it simple .float ,then drop.DUH!

If the well cannot be contained by the relief wells pumping mud then concrete and it continues to spill then here is a solution that may be expensive, but should be examined.
Construct a large diameter ‘supertanker’, tubular, twin skinned and as long as the water is deep, plus the height of a well platform deck. Have the ‘head section fitted with directional thrusters that will keep the head located as a floating rig does. A ship that flips from horizontal to vertical is already in use see;

Of course the hull may have to be floated in sections and joined at site, but tankers are already over 1/4 mile long, 1 mile for a short one off voyage may be possible.
The internal circular section must be maintained to well above the surface free of obstruction to prevent build up of pressure
Sink the open end of the tanker over the gusher, and extract the oil and water mix by gravity from the above water section to barges then tankers as the oil fills the ‘tube’. Concrete in the hollow skin. The pressure in the ‘tube’ will be no more than the static head above water.
Provision to funnel methane to a safe height to be flared off must be made, and provision to cap it and utilize this natural gas.
This idea is possible as far as the engineering side I have no doubt, but there are unknown variables. How long have we got? If the extreme pressures are for real, and they continue, they will scour the casing to failure point, and then enlarge the bore until the Blow Out Preventer is itself blown off. Production could then rise to unmanageable degree, with an ever expanding borehole.
My plan is fairly simple and seems even counter-productive at first. But like fighting fire with fire, i believe it might be effective! Fighting a hole with more holes sounds like a crazy idea but please read on.
I believe it may be possible to fix the severed pipeline by drilling a series of smaller “controlled holes”. First you need to go the bottom and expose a section of the pipe far enough away from the spill to clear the oil making it possible to work. Then a series of small controlled holes would be drilled in the pipe a good distance apart from each other. Considering small leaks and holes must occur in the pipe from time to time I assume they are much easier to fix. Each hole could be threaded with a special giant hollow screw so that as the hole is drilled into the pipe the oil can be syphoned through a pipe or hose system to a tanker on the surface. Holes would continue to be drilled into the pipe and the oil syphoned off till the volume of the oil being syphoned was close enough to the amount spilling from the major leak to result in a drop of pressure from the spill. With the pressure down and oil being syphoned from the controlled holes one of the previous methods of sealing the pipe may become more feasible. Once the main leak has been capped or sealed using a combination of previously explored methods such as a dome or top kill, then each smaller diameter “controlled hole” further up the pipe could be fixed one by one much easier the addressing such a large leak and jagged leak.
With the agreement of the president and the united states navy and bp oil.try and obtain a soon to be retired nuclear submarine.take the sub to a dry dock and commence alterations.ensure that computer controls are fitted so sub can be controlled without any staff need to be on the vessel at a critical time.welders will then cut out a section of the central section of the bottom steel plate of the vessel.this section of plate will then be pressure flanged and drilled as will the remaining bottom steel plate to recieve the flanged section.this will then be bolted in place using bolts that can be detonated when the vessel is in position.also whilst in dry dock valves and pipes will be fitted to the top section of the vessel.finally cut out any none vital eqiupment from the inside of the vessel and sail the vessel to the site. when the vessel is on site engage full computer control ,remove all personell and dive the vessel down to site of oil leak.ensure that vessel is positioned exactly with the flanged section over the leak itself.this should be possible using GPS andSat.nav. and submersables already on site.when in exact position allow vessel to settle onto leak and ocean floor.if this mass weight stops the leak ,the flange can be left in place.if leak has not stopped remove all personell and equipment to safe position and then by remote control detonate the holding bolts on the flanged bottom section of the hull .this will result in this section being pushed inside the vessel.the oil will then start to flow into the vessel and by connecting the valves and pipes fixed at the top of the vessel, it should be possible to suck the oil into surface tankers. the problem of removing the nuclear propulsion equipment could possibly be prepared whilst in dry dock but cosidering the urgency maybe at a later date TONY SMITH of ROCHDALE METAL RECOVERY LTD TEL>NO ENGLAND.07989443814 GOOD LUCK
Retired Boeing Engineer; suggest you loop ~ 100 feet of heavy walled SS pipe connected to a liquid nitrogen source / insert the [long/narrow] loop into the blow-hole to full depth/begin pumping liquid nitrogen through the closed circuit loop to solidify the material coming up the pipe. This should work to cap the ‘gusher’ until August when the relief well will be completed.

Are you familiar with a Tap and Die set.
Notice how the Tap is fluted to cut threads and let lubricating oil up.
Imagine a starter tap that ends in a point but has those 4 cut away areas for oil to escape while threads are being cut, This tap is being powered by a Oil drilling rig on the surface so it has the power and the pressured oil is going to clean the threads of cuttings as the tap works. Now the patent pending part – the 4 flutes end in a full thread creating a plug.
(problem – is it a straight in shot for several feet to allow the centering point on the front of the tap)
Alternative a die attached to drill stem with slots above to relieve pressure to start but as die threads further down the outside of the pipe the underwater slots are blocked so the oil is forced up the pipe.
(problem – is the pipe round enough to allow this. Is there enough pipe left to provide the depth required.

Use the SGP system, this system is perfect for deep water recovery. The problem is everyones solution is on how to cap this thing and that is not what we should do right now.
The SGP system will allow them to recover 100% of the oil now spilling into the Gulf and pipe it to waiting tankers, or cap it if thats what the Government and/or BP wants to do. With the amount of money BP has sunk in to getting the oil this far and the costs they are now facing, it is only logical that they should want to sell this oil.
The SGP system connects to the pipe now flowing, without threading, and pipes the oil in the direction thay need it to go, through pipes, to the surface.
The problem with deepwater recovery is the pressure from the depths and the pressure from the oil flowing out now, along with having to do everything with ROVs. SGP systems don’t even have to deal with pressure flow or ice crystal problems, I am suprised nobody has even mentioned the SGP system, this IS an instant fix to the problem and they still recover the oil, and really, I can’t believe they would even entertain the idea of shooting golf balls and old tires into this well…
First, Golf balls, then trying to recap it with something that will just barely fit in, given the fact that this is pressurized oil coming out of the damage pipe is impossible. If BP cannot recap it from the outer part of the pipe, why not use a cone shape design with rubber around it to plug it. If the U.S can built a 60 ton tank, so why can’t we built a 60 tons + cone shape object to plug it and there is no way the pressurized oil will push it out of the way because it’s just like an external aerodynamics when it goes in. No perfect realignment needed. BP can even have the option of placing a hollow opening in the middle of the cone shape plug to attach a new pipe and control valve to close or open it to release oil pressure or oil. Just a suggestion but I do believe that it will work or at least contain the major oil flow.
I have several solutions that not only will cap the well but will allow a reattachment to continue production. WITH OUT FAIL ! Actually dealing with the deep pressures are an asset . Several ideas deal with a pipe clamp aprox 5 foot long with two valves directly across from one another. ( Basicly a pipe split down the middle with a valve on each piece) Once in place a coring bit is used to bore the pipe via through the valves. Thus oil then is coming through both the valves and the existing pipe. You then push a short pipe (with a cutaway section in the middle on one side) push it into the bore with the open cutaway at the bottom. This blocks the path of the old uncapped pipe. Shut off the valves now and you have 100% capture. Reattach piping to the flanged valves and oil production can resume. This would take aprox 3 days. I have other ideas ,,,its is a simple fix …. Too many brlliant minds out there?? I fear something else is wrong? thanks AL

To stop the oil gush: Using precast concrete silos, approximately 14′ inside diameter, in 8′ high sections, stack around the existing sawed pipe, making sure that each section seals using salt resistant volclay sealing tubes around the perimeter of the silo. Engineer the height of the silo so that the last section is a dome shape with a pipe and valve that can be closed. By the time the 14′ wide silo fills with the gushing oil at the engineered height, the pressure will be minimized and the valve can be closed. Clean up is a different problem…but at least this could close the oil gush.

Perhaps it an idea to reduce the flow first and combine this with one or more other techniques they have developed.
The idea is to reduce the flow first with an electromagnet and steel balls or bars. I’m sure they can calculate the power of electricity they need to prevent the steel balls or bars getting blown out. Perhaps it’s necessary to combine it with glue techniques or fusion.
The technique should be used with another technique to seal the well permanently.
