BP Oil Spill Suggestion Box

May 31, 2010 – British Petroleum (BP) has finally opened a telephone hotline to take oil spill suggestions from the public. Whether the suggestions will be seriously considered by BP remains to be seen, but I am happy to report that I had a satisfactory experience when I checked out the Oil Spill Suggestion Hotline. When I called (281)-366-5511, the phone was actually answered by a live person (in my case, after only 2 rings) who was polite and actually seemed to be putting my information into a computer. The operator took my name, city and state of residence, zip code, telephone number, and email address. She then asked for my suggestion, and requested that I speak slowly so she could write it all down. In my case, it was easy to do because I was able to tell her that there were between 300-400 suggestions already written down here at BPOilNews.com. She asked me to repeat the web address twice, and thanked me for the information. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the way the call was handled. I’m not ready to announce that BP is going to using public suggestions, because it may all be a PR ploy, but I am willing to suggest that anyone who has a good suggestion should call the hotline in addition to posting it here. The phone number for the BP Oil Spill Suggestion Hotline is (281)-366-5511.

THIS MIGHT SOUND CRAZY- BRING SOME GLACIERS THERE-
I WOULD THINK IT WOULD SLOW THE OIL SPILLS DOWN
AND POSSIBLY KEEP OIL FROM SPREADING OUT FURTHER

Use giant ShamWows to to soak up the oil, then the oil can be recouperated and the ShamWows reused! It’s gonna work.

Insert a heavy gauge, tapered pipe into the damaged pipe. The pipe would have the slightest of taper and be as long as possible. It would have ridges machined onto the outside surface to aid in digging in and gripping the I.D. of the damaged pipe – much like long hose shank fittings. It could be fitted with o-rings,heat trace and sensors for tracking. A high pressure valve is welded at the upper end of pipe and left open during insertion. Pipe clamps, ears, brackets, slip or swivel flanges,come-a-longs,and threaded rods can be used to help rig and ensure pipe stays locked in place. After sealing any slight leakage left, the valve can be closed and recovery piping and hose can be attached. Guy wires could be attached from top of set up to augered anchors on ocean floor to stabilize set up.

From what I understand from watching the news, BP has a retainment hood installed on the well with 3 valves. They have one valve closed and are waiting to close all three to test the integrety of the hood and existing pressure in the well. If they dropped a line down and attached it to the closed valve they could then open that valve and close #2 valve with no damage to the containment hood and send that oil to the surface to be processed. Drop another line and attach to #2 valve and continue in that order until all 3 valves are sending oil to the surface with no damage to the containment hood.

This is more directed at the clean up, especially in the back water areas.
Put a $5.00 per gallon bounty on all recoverd oil. I am sure people down
there would take advantage of this. They walk the road ways up here (Iowa)
picking up 5 cent pop cans.
Just a idea.

I have been in the business of leak detections and repair for 32 years. In following up the efforts done to stop the spill , I understand that the next step is going to be a massive injection of mud (the last attempt didnt work)
I do have an idea that will hold the mud down by incorporating a special product within the mud . The mixture will harden the mud in the water within about 5 hours maximum and help hold it down until it is cemented . It will prevent the mud from dispersing under the heavy pressure .I need to explain that technique to a local engineer there and dialogue directly with him , either by phone or by email

This comment pertains to the cleanup of tidal areas, salt marshs, dunes, etc. along the affected coastline.
Investigate the feasibility of controlled burning of selected areas to burn grasses, reeds, etc. in order to burn out more efficiently and completely oil deposits embedded in these areas. This should be attempted only if the dune grasses and reeds are assessed by experts to be capable of rejuvenating themselves spontaneously or by replanting. A model for this idea is the spontaneous rejuvenation of forests leveled by forest fires. If feasible and successful, this method may save extensive and expensive manal removal of tar balls and other oil deposits from these areas.
Thank you. George Hammer
